Incredibly Cheap Eats: Street Cart Empanadas

Frying good, cheap empanadas

This street cart, at the corner of 13th Street and 5th Avenue in south Park Slope, does a very brisk business in empanadas. It’s easy to see why, as the block it sits on is otherwise lacking in good eats (with the exception of nearby Tacos Nuevo Mexico).

The cart is owned and run by a sweet, efficient woman, who fries the empanadas to order. Each one costs $1.25, and are teetering, thinnish snacks, about 8-inches across with a judicious amount of filling. The crusts are sizzled up crunchy and golden along the edges. Choose between spicy shredded chicken, ground beef (shown below) or cheese. I prefer the chicken.
