Scary, Fabulous Joan Crawford Immortalized One More Time

We love to make fun of Joan Crawford because she was such an image-obsessed diva and controversial mother–and that hair! But the self-made glamour goddess DOES fully deserves the glossy treatment she’s getting in Joan Crawford: The Enduring Star, a lush new Rizzoli book by Peter Cowie, who concentrates on the first half of Joan’s career, before the twins, the Oscar, and the larger tantrums.

Using over 200 photos (yes, the woman loved to pose), Cowie serves a tribute to a Hollywood glitterbug par excellence and concludes that Joan’s fans “saw in her broad-shouldered, smoldering, often trashy allure a transcendental version of their everyday experience.” We love you, mommie dearest.
