Thalia Zedek‘s now an acclaimed solo artist, but her story reads like a laundry list of amazing, ferociously cult ’80s/’90s alt-rock bands: Dangerous Birds, Uzi, Live Skull, Come. Her one constant sound? “Intense” is probably the word, though she could howl 15 better ones; that husky, scraped hiss is hers alone, but Kim Gordon and PJ Harvey have certainly tried to mimic it. Zedek’s brutally personal and political lyrics, coupled with her unrelenting spinning instrumentation, are the sound of thinly restrained chaos. No “grrl” required—there’s only one kind of power, and she’s got it. With Deer Tick and the Weight.
