The talented Bessie Award–winning Okwui Okpokwasili takes audiences on a journey to Africa with Pent Up: A Revenge Dance, a “funktified folk tale” loosely inspired by the myth of Medea. In the piece, which is getting an extended run after appearing at the COIL Festival at P.S.122., Okpokwasili portrays a woman in exile who loses the ability to speak her native tongue and, with it, her connection to her family’s past. Exploring everything from traditional spells to third-world brothels, while interweaving rituals and original songs, the graceful, statuesque Okpokwasili will likely have you under her spell by the end of the night. Peter Born directs.

Tuesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 5:30 p.m. Starts: Feb. 10. Continues through Feb. 22, 2009
