Phanton Smell Identified


NY1 ran a report this morning identifying the phantom smell that arrives from the west once or twice a year in Manhattan (yesterday, in particular), smelling like maple syrup being poured over hot pancakes. Apparently, it comes from a North Bergen, New Jersey flavor house called Frutarom, and a spokesperson for the company — founded in 1933 to provide flavorings and scents for the food industry — says it represents the odor produced by processing the Middle Eastern spice fenugreek into (you guessed it!) artificial maple flavoring.

Some find the odor exhilarating, but most describe it as nauseating.
