Sad news out of the East Village today. Stefan Lutak, the longtime proprietor of the Holiday Cocktail Lounge, has passed away. Born in Ukraine in 1920, Lutak fought with the Soviet Army in World War II and came to New York by boat in 1949. In 1965, he and his wife opened the Holiday on St. Mark’s Place.
There, Lutak served drinks to Allen Ginsburg and W.H. Auden. The legendary dive bar closed briefly last month due to Lutak’s health issues, but it had recently reopened. Now it remains to be seen what will happen to Lutak’s beloved bar in the wake of his passing.
