EV Grieve reminds us that today is McSorley’s Day by Mayoral proclamation. Though the East 7th Street bar, thought to be New York’s oldest, officially celebrates its birthday tomorrow, in 2004 Bloomberg proclaimed it for the 17th, saying “McSorley’s is real. It’s part of Old New York that has survived,” a touching if rare sign of mayoral solicitude for underdeveloped property. EV has some nice reminiscences and photos, and Inside the Apple recalls its old motto, “Good Ale, Raw Onions and No Ladies,” the Ladies part of which was obviated by a legal decision in 1970, and the Raw Onions part by modern custom. The Bowery Boys has a podcast tribute and more photos. And here’s a tribute to McSorley’s old-tyme urinals, at which you will certainly get a good look if you drink there. Photo (cc) bobster1985.
