In Europe, the under-shampooed-and-conditioned members of Norwegian black-metal troupe 1349 sport threatening nail gauntlets on their forearms, painted-on Anton LaVey moustaches, panda-eyes eye shadow (known colloquially in the scene as ‘corpsepaint’ because, duh, it makes them look dead). They surround themselves with orgies of five-foot-high flames during the times in which frontghoul Ravn isn’t expectorating fireballs. Coupled with the tornados of Gatling drumbeats and lightning-speed riffs, it makes for an unforgettable spectacle. American audiences get a flame-retardant version of the above, which only makes the band more chilling. With Annunaki.
