New England psych rockers Major Stars possess a knack for wrangling in precarious jams—a rare talent for blotter-rockers, especially live. On disc, there are times where their songs sound stretched too far, as if they might collapse under the weight of a lengthy guitar solo, too many cymbal crashes, or frontwoman Sandra Barrett’s confident bellow. But through some mystic set of checks and balances, Major Stars know when to stop before it goes too far, enjoying extremes while avoiding catastrophe. Isn’t that what music’s supposed to sound like anyway? With Magic Markers drummer Pete Nolan’s Spectre Folk. The show is free if you were born in the month of February.
