Should “Gay” Be Eliminated as a Genre?

Talented singer Jay Brannan–who you’ll remember from the movie Shortbus–is tired of the “gay” label being applied to certain forms of same-sex-tinged entertainment. Brannan doesn’t get why gay musicians need to be constantly labeled gay musicians or why anyone would even want to be in a movie that’s segregated off to a special shelf of the rental place. As Brannan says in his provocative livejournal rant, “I think having a gay section at the video store is the same as asking black people to drink from a different fountain.” Snap!

Read his argument and see if you want to label the guy “totally misguided” or “extremely contempo and post-gay in his realization that the queers should simply be addressed as humans.” Or not at all.
