Simon Shaheen

I’ll grab any opportunity to enjoy the music of the great Arabic composers and singers Mohammad Abdel Wahhab, Farid Al-Atrash, and Wadi’ Al-Safi in person, and this evening promises to be better than most. Palestinian violinist and ‘ud virtuoso Simon Shaheen leads an orchestra in a program titled “Aswat (Voices): Celebrating the Golden Age of Arab Music & Cinema.” A truly impressive quartet—Ibrahim Azzam, Sonia M’barek, Khalil Abonula, and Rima Khcheich—will sing music performed originally by Arab-world legends Um Kulthum, Asmahan, and Fairouz.
