Staten Island Copper Pipe Thief Busted in $5,000 Spree

The theft of copper pipe is not unknown in the city, and though the price of copper has been volatile of late, we may say William P. Moore of Staten Island was bullish on it, snatching about $5,000 of pipes, tubing and fixtures in recent weeks before getting caught yesterday. Moore, a heroin addict, broke into a number of supply companies and trailers, carted off the ductile metal, and sold some of it for cash. Staten Island has been hit with copper crime waves before, with even copper wires from lampposts being plundered, but it has not yet been determined whether Moore is part of a ring or just a freelancer.
