Darryl Strawberry, beloved member of the 1986 World Champion Mets and rehabilitated drug addict, is rejoining the team today — albeit only for a week — as a hitting instructor. And he promises to loosen up more than their swing. Strawberry, who recently released a book containing stories of his sexual encounters in the Mets clubhouse (“[The equipment manager] just stood there shaking his head while I finished up”), tells Newsday that if steroids were around in his playing days, “Hell yeah I would have used them… I’m not saying that it was the right thing to do. But if that was going on in the 80s, that probably would have been in my system too.” That’s the old pepper, Straw! Now bring back Wally Backman and maybe the Mets will get some fire, or at least a few cases of beer, in their bellies. (You can see how Darryl’s input worked out in a couple of weeks: This Friday tickets go on sale for the April 3 and 4 Mets-Red Sox exhibition games at Citifield.) Photo (cc) tonystl.
