This remarkable film, what seems to be the first sensitive treatment of a homosexual relationship in European cinema, concerns the doomed passion of a famous painter for his thieving protege. It’s a triumph of chiaroscuro lighting, put to use in the service of Dreyer’s obsessive preoccupation with the expressivity of the human face.
