What to Bring to Angelica Kitchen

Every week or so in ‘What to B When You BYOB’ we ask a local wine
store to recommend a wine to drink at a nearby BYOB restaurant. They’re
asked to consider the cuisine at the restaurant and suggest an
appropriate bottle for under $15.

This week, we focus on vegetarian boozing, and Angelica Kitchen (300 East 12th Street) . It’s easy to forget that the classic vegetarian spot is also BYOB, but you can indeed bring your own wine or beer to accompany whatever soy products you’re eating. We asked the nearby Union Square Wines & Spirits (140 Fourth Avenue) to suggest some pairings. Their suggestions are after the jump…

Sella & Mosca, Cannonau di Sardegna, Riserva 2005
“This lighter bodied red has a rustic character to it,” says USQ sales associate Clarissa Tartar, “it would go well with marinated tofu.”

Independent Producers, Merlot, Columbia Valley Washington, 2007 ($12.99)
“Though it’s 100% Merlot,” Tartar says “this wine has a lighter style. It’s not plummy, it’s more raspberry than blackberry.”

Indaba, Chardonnay, South Africa, 2008 ($6.99)
“It’s got citrus and tropical fruit flavors, some pineapple and some honey,” says Tartar, “I think it would go well with salad and greens.”
