I don’t know what this says about me, but this weekend I knew it was really, truly spring not so much because the weather was warmer (although that certainly helped) but because I found myself at my favorite bar and they had new spring cocktails.
The weekend before last, Angel’s Share (8 Stuyvesant Street, 2nd floor) was serving their special Winter Cocktails. This weekend, low and behold, the menu had changed. Gone are the Winter Cocktails, and like sunshine, in come three new Spring Cocktails.
Now, let me say this, I, like DiGregorio, wonder about the place of $15 cocktails in these times, and they’re not something I do very regularly (I typically don’t end up at Angel’s Share two weekends in a row). But, if I’m going to do it anywhere, I like to do it at Angel’s Share where the cocktails are consistently inventive and delicious (and actually more like $13, what a bargain), occasionally incorporating shiso (a big selling point for me), and one gets some of the pleasures of a speakeasy–a seat, a nice atmosphere, great drinks, a cheesy way to impress out-of-towners–without the annoyances–having to plan ahead and call some number for resys.
Anyway, the new cocktails are the Angel’s Sling, the Quintessence, and the Swing Spring. First I tried the Quintessence, made from Jasmine Infused Rum (clear), Elderflower Liqueur, Grapefruit Juice and Tonic. It was served over ice (can’t quite recall what type) and was utterly delicious and not too sweet. I’m not typically a huge tonic fan, but when they use it at Angel’s Share it always blends in so well. I also tried the Swing Spring, made from Sakura Flavored Vodka, Plum Wine, Peach Liqueur, Yamamomo, and a Shiso Leaf. This was served in a martini fashion with a whole Yamamomo fruit sitting in the bottom of the glass. It was pretty sweet but still enjoyable. The combination of the plum and shiso flavors reminded me of a shiso plum sushi roll, which is always a pleasing association for me.
I didn’t try the Angel’s Sling which had quite a laundry list of ingredients: Beefeater Gin, Homemade Cherry Liqueur, Grand Marnier, Galliano, Peach Bitter, Rose Syrup, Pineapple Juice, Fresh Lemon Juice, and a splash of Club Soda.
