Go only if you want to see a true master at work. The pianist’s command of the trio setting is daunting; few rhythm sections are as coordinated as Jamal’s. Stretching harmonies, shifting tempos, corralling ideas-their sense of swing is radically deep, and it generates lots of pleasure as it fills the room. Dynamics have a lot to do with it; he moves from light to dark with mucho nuance. That’s what makes the music so imposing.
