The Staten Island Advance announces that local favorite Goodfella’s pizzeria “earns title of ‘world’s best pizza,‘” which will rile advocates of Lombardi’s and Di Fara. They may content themselves with the news that this honor was bestowed, not in Brooklyn or Little Italy, but in Las Vegas, at the 2009 International Pizza Expo, an event featuring “World Pizza Games” (with such events as the “Largest Dough Stretch”) and inspiring press releases with ledes such as “Papa Bello Enterprises, Inc. (Pink Sheets: PAPA) makes a franchising debut.” Also, Goodfella’s winning entry is a “Crustacean Sensation” featuring lobster, shrimp and crabmeat and “finished off by a blackberry brandy cream sauce.” To be fair, Goodfella’s had previously won the Vegas honors in 2007 with a more traditional “Smokin’ Goodfella’s” sausage-and-peppers pie (pictured), and is very well spoken of at Chowhound and Yelp.
More unfortunate pizza news comes from Coney Island, where the legendary Tontonno’s was shuttered after a fire on Saturday. Owner Louise Ciminieri says that the famous brick oven has been water-damaged and must be rebricked. But she says she’s done it before, and that Totonno’s will re-open and “I promise you, it’ll be the same exact pizza.”
