Chango Spasiuk

by

Argentinean accordianist Chango Spasiuk breathes uninhibited zeal into his instrument, bringing the chamamè folk of the country’s northeast (and, concurrently, the lower classes) to broader, empathetic scope. His latest album, Pynandì (“barefoot”), is topical as ever, alluding to the distraught poverty of his home. He lays this especially plaintively, and gorgeously in the classical guitar strums of “El Camino,” but there are jubilant moments, too, in the bright celebratory pulses of “Tierra Colorada” and “Alvear Orilla/Estancia Santa Maria.” His neighbors just danced a bit longer in the sun.
