This week in chef news…

Top Chef season four’s Antonia Lofaso and Iron Chef Kevin Rathbun will be in St. Croix April 14-18 for a fundraising event called “Iron Chef, Top Chef, Island Chef.” The two TV chefs, along with a local chef, will compete to make the best 30-minute meal, each with the same local ingredients. Proceeds will go to the St. Croix Foundation, a local community development group.

Le Bernardin’s Eric Ripert was inducted into the French Legion d’Honneur this week, which is something like being knighted. He joins the rank of fellow Chevalier (knight) Daniel Boulud.

Resto’s new executive chef, Bobby Hellen, implements a more locavorist philosophy, adding such specialties to the menu as house charcuterie, lamb belly confit and a cote de boeuf, both from Four Story Hill Farm, as well as veggies from the Greenmarket.

L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon executive chef, Yosuke Suga, is leaving the restaurant but not the family. He will take over the Taipei branch next month, while Xavier Boyer, from the London branch, is slated to take his place in New York.

Eater reports that Brandon Kida has been named chef de cuisine at Asiate in the Mandarin Oriental, where he has worked since the restaurant’s opening in 2003. A commenter says the promotion is long overdue.
