GAY.H.S.

by

If there were more students like Shulamit Izen, maybe high school wouldn’t be such torture for gay kids. The lesbian ninth-grader worked tirelessly to form a gay-straight alliance at her Jewish school in Boston, which is chronicled in Irena Fayngold’s 2005 film Hineini: Coming Out in a Jewish High School. Part of 92Y Tribeca’s Jewish Risk-Takers: Films that Change the World program, Hineini shows how the courage of one can change a community—and how the cheerleader and the captain of the football team are not the only kids who deserve to enjoy their formative years.
