The two arthouse champions—he in minimalist and wildly diverse classical scores, she in beat-spawned punk rock—are inextricably tied with New York culture and intellectualism. Sometimes it seems as if they could’ve only met here: Glass rose in the structured brigs of Juilliard and later had lessons with famed composer Nadia Boulanger; Smith gallivanted in Paris with Robert Mapplethorpe—but both found our backyard their muse. As their dizzying legions of followers will attest, his deliberate repetitive structure and her scorching poetry is a match made in downtown; tonight, they honor another friend, Allen Ginsberg.
