150+ Audition to Sing Anthem for Staten Island Yankees

If you weren’t at the Staten Island Mall on Saturday, you missed a local talent show to warm the most jaded cosmopolitan heart: more than 150 vocalists competed for the right to sing the National Anthem at the start of Staten Island Yankees ballgames and “God Bless America” whenever they do that in Class-A ball. We’re tempted to say they’re all winners, but there are only 38 homes games for the Yankees’ minor-league team this season; the lucky few, a SI Yankees spokesman promised us, will be announced in a few weeks. We hope the rest of them had the foresight to arrive early and take in the job fair that preceded the auditions, at which the SI Yankees took applications for 150 seasonal ballpark positions, including grounds crew, parking lots attendants and concession stand workers. It ain’t the spotlight, but it’s still the Show.
