Neko Case

With songs full of hippie-dippie environmentalism and diamonds and rust, auburn-haired folkstress Neko Case might as well be the hyper-aware indie generation’s Joan Baez (the new Neko boasts a straight-faced tune titled “Never Turn Your Back on Mother Earth”). Where the occasional New Pornographer separates herself from her folk predecessors is in just how pleasant she makes discontentment sound—her confident, seductive alto often belies her lyrics, almost begging listeners to unite their various attention spans to appreciate any given song (which is really where hyper-aware indie types get off anyway). With Joan as Police Woman.
