Jang Sa-ik

In 1980, at age 46, singer-songwriter Jang Sa-ik quit his job as an electronics salesman to devote himself to music full time. He has subsequently released five albums, including 1997’s Coughing and last year’s Voyage to Heaven. His music is rooted in Korean tradition, particularly the folkloric “kukuruk” style, and he possesses a powerful rasping tenor voice accompanied by a group that occasionally veers into jazz territory.
