Weird how our pets are allowed to eat horse meat, but we’re not. Some of my finest memories of eating in northern Italy (they also love horse meat in France), involve dining on horse, ass, and donkey meat that has been pounded thin, breaded, and fried into schnitzels. The animals that end up at the horse butchers have had long and productive lives, and part of good animal husbandry involves making sure that no meat goes to waste. The horse meat is tough and is more strongly flavored than beef, which is why it’s treated like a chicken fried steak. If we can eat buffalo and emu, what sort of weird-ass squeamishness prevents Americans from eating horse?
