Chipper electronica is intuitive and, just as often, a gloriously convenient punching bag. Ratatat hit both marks with their crisp, coolly paced instrumental electropop of tinny taps and rattling bleats. They are sometimes unfairly maligned as repetitive (or “elevator music for hipsters,” to quote a surly metalhead acquaintance), but, three albums onward, their beats are genuinely durable and deceptively intricate, forged on guitar (Mike Stroud) and synthesizer (Evan Mast). Even their name is onomatopoeic, so everyone buck up and dance already. With Tussle and Black Pus.
