Kinetics aren’t same thing as swing, but the saxophonist and his pals find a way to bring a fluid groove to an array of friction points during any given tune. Backbeat figures into the mix, and frontbeat, too. Basically, everyone’s a percussionist; even when the boss is unfurling line after line, he’s adding to constant crackle of drummer Nate Smith. Stormy stuff that errs on the side of mechanics while still pushing expressionism into the spotlight.
