EMO PRESIDENCY

by

More than just a pretty face on the $20 bill, Andrew Jackson presided over an economic depression, attempted to overthrow the electoral college, stirred North-South tensions, and ordered the brutal relocation of various Indian tribes. He also engaged in a bigamous marriage and upheld slavery. Really, Barack Obama can only hope to accomplish so much. Writer Alex Timbers and composer Michael Friedman, both Obie winners, effectively smoke Old Hickory in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson: The Concert Version, their musical history of our seventh president. An ebullient mashup of PBS documentary, elementary school pageant, Mad magazine feature, and emo-rock concert, the show includes such songs as “Life Sucks,” “Ten Little Indians,” and “Populism, Yea, Yea.” Benjamin Walker stars as the problematic POTUS.

Tuesdays, Sundays, 7 p.m.; Wednesdays-Fridays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: May 5. Continues through May 24, 2009
