The local universities dub this The Last Chance Invitational because it is one of the final track events of the school year, though the people running the event prefer the official name, the NYC Qualifying Challenge. Icahn Stadium—named for financier Carl Icahn, who chipped in $10 million for the renovation—is a state-of-the-art facility that meets International Amateur Athletic Federation specification for local, national, and international track and field events. Today and Saturday, more than 100 college teams will participate in the Challenge. New York City track records are fair game here—last year, 30 meet records were broken and seven athletes went on to worldwide ranking with their performances. Expect quality competition, along with the spectacular Manhattan skyline.
