With each passing year, his chatter is reduced and his eloquence refined. No question, the saxophonist is still naturally garrulous on the new Metamorphosen, but his focus is obvious and the payoff’s abundant. Monk gives him a puzzle to decipher, the ballads reveal his heart, and those high-flying, hard-swinging ditties sanction some devastating group interplay. The group’s long-standing chemistry is being recalibrated for this somewhat rare club gig: Tain is on a lark, and new drummer Justin Faulkner will have some shoes to fill. Bring it on.
