The best of the latest glut of brown-acid psych-rock freakout bands and also the best of the latest of glut of groups with “Crystal” in their name (though no one will ever surpass the Crystals, no matter what nefarious specter Phil Spector has cast on his past), Long Beach, California’s Crystal Antlers benefit most from vocalist/bassist/woodwindist Jonny Bell and his anguished squall. Like grating steel, Bell’s voice can cut through even the most mundane groove and make it something anguished and intriguing—and since he does it often without warning, it’s easy to share the adrenaline rush with him. With Ribbons and Radical Dads.
