RJ Smith called D. Boon a “storm with skin.” Something similar could be said about the ever-rollicking saxophonist Carter. He busts everything apart when he’s on a tear, and his blend of control and ideas add up to a grits ‘n’ gravy virtuosity that’s rightfully proud of its natural aggression. There are nights when you can’t take your eyes off him, and methinks this may be one. He’s recording live for the club’s Half Note label, and he’s surrounded by hot shots.
