Oakland, California’s Painted Cakes may have the initials “P.C.” but this mostly-instrumental trio thankfully doesn’t say much in terms of political diatribes. Mixing ethereal guitar feedback, thumb pianos, hand percussion, violin, keyboards, bass, drums, and lotsa lotsa loops, they’re far more concerned with creating densely layered sound fields that navigate between the ambient and the angular. Dig the world music vibe (gamelan and tabla influences?) that peek-a-boos time and again. Tonight’s their second of four local shows.
