In honor of the Kentucky Derby this Saturday (and considering our recent induction into the Secret Sherry Society), we thought we’d feature this non-traditional take on the tipple traditionally enjoyed at the event: the Mint Julep.
Bitter Orange Julep
2 1/2 oz Clement VSOP Rum
1 oz Clement Creole Shrubb
3/4 oz Dry Sack Especial 15-year-plus Oloroso Sherry
1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
5 dashes vanilla extract
3 dashes Fee’s West Indian Orange Bitters
1 tsp orange marmalade
1 large orange wheel, cut in half
6-8 mint leaves
In a large mixing glass, muddle the orange wheel with the vanilla extract and Oloroso. Add the Clement Creole Shrubb, Clement VSOP, fresh lemon juice, orange marmalade, bitters and mint leaves, along with several large ice cubes. Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds, and strain into a Julep Cup filled with crushed ice. Garnish with mint and orange peel.
