BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO

by

Perhaps the generalization that women overanalyze just about everything might be pretty accurate. Artist Sophie Calle’s first U.S. exhibition, Take Care of Yourself, takes the art of analysis and multiplies it by 107, literally. After Calle’s boyfriend broke up with her via e-mail, she figured the only way to make sense of it was to ask 107 women—including two made out of wood—and a parrot to interpret this electronic letter however they saw fit. The result is an expansive exhibition, which first debuted at the French Pavilion of the 2007 Venice Biennale, and includes such interpretative pieces as dance performances, textual analyses, photographic portraits, and video installations. Hopefully, she’s moved on now.
