Marnie

by

(Alfred Hitchcock, 1964).
Although badly received on its original release, this poetic and complex romantic drama has gradually acquired the critical reputation it deserves as prime Hitchcock. Tippi Hedren plays the title role, a frigid compulsive thief; Sean Connery is the business man, a former victim of the lady, as disturbed as she is, who blackmails her into marriage. Moving, full of rococo flourishes, the picture resounds with Bernard Herrmann’s magnificent score.
