Every year about this time Indian mangoes appear in Queens South Asian grocery stores, including Patel Bros., and cause quite a stir. They’re smaller, greener, sweeter, darker-fleshed, and creamier than the Mexican and Central American mangoes–which often have a red coloration–that you might be used to, and less stringy than Haitian mangoes, which are also highly prized for their flavor.
Shown above are three Indian mangoes (which come wrapped in a Styrofoam net), contrasted with a larger Guatemalan mango. Indian mangoes took an 18-year hiatus from American markets after being banned here because of fears that they might contain pesticides, and the ban was only lifted in 2007. India produces 50 percent of the world’s mango supply.
