So You Wanna Work at the New Yorker?

Daniel Baum, the former New Yorker staff writer, is currently Twittering the story of his hiring and firing by the magazine for which everybody on the planet would like to work. Topics discussed: New Yorker contract rates, health insurance, how one comes to write for the mag, and, once there, how those pieces get edited. (Quote: “The magazine does run everything through the deflavorizer.”) At the moment, Baum’s paused: he’s just been offered a job by David Remnick, heavenly angels have burst into song, and the axe has yet to fall.
