If Spinal Tap perform without the wigs, are they really Spinal Tap? Can these two worlds, sane and psychotic, exist simultaneously? This is complicated, man—it’s like Schrödinger’s cat (with a wig). But trust that Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer know what they’re doing here: Their two-night Beacon jaunt “Unwigged and Unplugged” reunites the This Is Spinal Tap! and A Mighty Wind jesters for unprecedented acoustic renditions from both soundtracks. No facial hair, no pre-op drag, no Stonehenge stage props: just three men and the lovely poetry of “Children of the Sun” and “Tonight I’m Gonna Rock You Tonight” revisited in delicate finger-picking. Do you doubt this will work? As they once noted, “It’s such a fine line between stupid and clever”—and they’re the holy rollers of both.
