Cinema and desire are closely intertwined in this third chapter of the autobiographical Alexandria series in which the protagonist (here played by the director himself) daydreams about the actor whose career he launched but who had deserted him, although he does fall in love again, this time with a beautiful young woman—he’ll make her a star, too. In this unique self-portrait Chahine conflates real-life episodes with dream-like moments.
