Conservatives In a Tizzy Over Yet Another Innocuous Food Preference

First, there was Obama’s choice of a burger condiment… and now this. Apparently, Conservatives are worried that Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor will be swayed by pigs’ feet.

Reacting, ridiculously, to a speech the judge gave in 2001 in which she said that, “Personal experiences affect the facts that judges choose to see… I accept there will be some (judgments) based on my gender and my Latina heritage,” some Republicans are worried that Sotomayor will be an activist judge.

The Latina justice went on to say, “For me, a very special part of my being Latina is the mucho platos de arroz, gandules y pernil–rice, beans and pork–that I have eaten at countless family holidays and special events,” which has some right-wingers whispering about how popular Puerto Rican dishes like patitas de cerdo con garbanzo–pigs’ feet with chickpeas–could influence her.

And, so what if it could? What socio-political connotations do pigs’ feet have exactly? Certainly, they can’t be considered elitist. Are they seen as too efficient? Too ethnic? Or are Republicans afraid that Sotomayor is will be susceptible to being bribed with trotters? Sheesh!
