Perhaps it was three decades of exposure to the Saturn-born Sun Ra, but saxophonist Marshall Allen—who turned 85 in May—has seemingly always looked 85 and played like he was 25. Or 250. The centerpiece of this year’s Vision Festival, the Lifetime Achievement Award-receiving Allen will make a rare appearance with much of the double-trio quintet that recorded 2003’s worthy-of-the-title All-Star Game: bassist William Parker, tenor saxophonist Kidd Jordan, drummer Hamid Drake, and rediscovered wünderkind Henry Grimes. Later, Allen will lead the Sun Ra Arkestra, whose alien swing has kept Allen a young lion, or whatever is the Saturnian equivalent. With Bill Cole’s Untempered Ensemble.
