For the future of calypso, look to the man who defined the past: Trinidad native David Rudder, a superstar in this genre and also the dance-heavy Soca, first as a member of prominent band Charlie’s Roots in the ’70s and soon after as one of the top-selling solo artists in the country. He expanded to steel band influences in 1998 with the defiantly political Haiti, which launched him straight to Caribbean Music Award wins and laudatory inches in this very paper. Slam poet Samantha Thornhill, a fellow Trinidadian, opens for him at the idyllic Prospect Park Bandshell.
