New York

Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone? Well, it’s been eight years since performance artist John Kelly donned a blond wig and transformed himself into Canadian songstress Joni Mitchell, so New York audiences have had ample time to mourn his absence. No mere drag act, Kelly pours his honeyed counter tenor onto hits from “Blue” and “Ladies of the Canyon” in a performance as affecting as it is skilled. Even Ms. Mitchell, apparently, agrees: Attending a Kelly show some years ago, she said, “I didn’t expect to be so touched. I cried in two places.” Teary fans can now rejoice—taking a big yellow taxi to Kelly’s Paved Paradise Redux: The Art of Joni Mitchell at the Abrons Art Center.

Thursdays-Sundays, 8 p.m. Starts: June 18. Continues through June 27, 2009
