STREET BEATS

by

Put that iPod down! The Make Music New York Festival is the one time of year when hundreds of musicians head out onto the street corners and into the parks to provide your soundtrack to the city—and the offerings couldn’t be any more diverse. The sonic melting pot includes a day of French contemporary songs at the Fête de la Musique (at Central Park’s SummerStage), Colombian music by pianist-composer Pablo Mayor’s Folklore Urbano (in front of the Brooklyn Museum), and “Punk Island” (a/k/a Governors Island), which features 70 bands playing on a dozen stages. Whether you know the bagpipes, the glockenspiel, the harmonica, or just want to shout something into a megaphone, there are more than 20 organized gatherings you can join. Or just step outside and start singing.
