What’s Happening This Week–A Good Herring Day; Learn How to Surf & Turf

As many of you know, our weekly dining and drinking newsletter features all the coolest epicurean events in the city (and, this week, in Jersey).

Herring & Aquavit Festival
Russ & Daughters
June 17, 6-9 pm

Sample a world of herring, including herring with mustard and dill, curried herring, Gubbora, warm Jansson’s Temptation, and the seasonal New Catch Holland Herring. Of course, what would a herring fest be without infused aquavit pairings, such as elderberry, lingonberry, and ginger? It would be a fishy affair, that’s what.

Father’s Day Surf & Turf Class
Wildwood Barbeque
June 20, 11:30-2:30 pm

Join Executive Pitmaster “Big Lou” Elrose for a grilled surf-and-turf cooking class featuring skirt steak, lobster, and all the fixin’s. After the lesson on smoking and grilling, you’ll get to eat what you learned: a BBQ lunch complete with beer pairings.

“The secret to great grilled surf and turf is to start off with a good piece of meat, a great dry rub and a homemade barbecue finishing sauce, along with a fish or seafood that will not fall apart on the grill, such as lobster tail or tuna,” Big Lou, a former NYPD officer, told us. “The class will focus on the big ‘do’s and don’ts’ of grilling, such as how to start a charcoal fire, always keeping a cold spot on your grill, proper way of turning food, and how not to burn the outside of food while the inside is still raw.”

Maynard James Keenan Bottle Signing
Wine Library
June 18, 6-8 pm
Tool frontman and vintner Maynard James Keenan will be signing wine bottles at Gary Vaynerchuk’s Wine Library in Springfield, NJ. The event is strictly for fans of Keenan’s Caduceus Cellars offerings–not his music. “Only wine bottles will be signed. No CDs, posters, or other memorabilia are permitted,” warns the invite.
