Nutrition Advocate and Pain in the Ass MeMe Roth Profiled in Times

Remember that council bill proposing that fast food places be “zoned” away from schools? Councilmember Eric Gioia was assisted in that crusade by National Action Against Obesity, which we noted at the time was also campaigning against girl scout cookies. And that’s what rang a bell when we were reading today’s Times story about MeMe Roth, who heads NAAO and is also, the story reveals, a nut.

She had the cops called on her “when she absconded with the sprinkles and syrups on a table where members [of the YMCA] were being served ice cream.” In her former New Jersey community she “waged war on the bagels and Pringles meal served to kids at lunch.” Now she’s in the city and giving the authorities at P.S. 9 a hard time about offering her daughter snack food, which she has instructed the child to collect in “a piece of Tupperware their mother calls a ‘junk food collector,'” presumably as evidence.

The Times has but little space to devote to Roth, but Lindsay Beyerstein recalls when she went on Inside Edition to denounce 17-year-old American Idol winner Jordin Sparks for being “overweight” and “unhealthy.” Beyerstein also directs us to Roth’s moribund Wedding Gown Challenge blog, at which she tells readers “studies show that gaining merely 10-20 pounds once you’re fully-grown materially increases your chances of premature death,” and encourages women to try on their old wedding gowns to gauge their fat-induced mortality risk.

She has also compared marketers of high-fat foods to rapists, telling the Guardian, “The defence has been made in the case of sex criminals that there is pleasure on the part of the victim. The same is true with what we’re doing with food. We may abuse our bodies with food, but it’s incredibly pleasurable. From a food marketer’s point of view, when your quote unquote victim is so willing and enjoying of the process, who’s fighting back?”

Doubtless when we’re all living on soy protein and soma Roth will be remembered as the John Brown of the New Age. Happily we don’t live in such an enlightened time yet. Meantime please keep Mayor Bloomberg away from this woman before he empowers her to lead temperance unions to smash up Dunkin’ Donuts.
