Is there any shame in marrying someone because they’re loaded? We suppose if you’re on Desperate Housewives, then perhaps. But, hey, we’re in a recession, people! What’s a girl to do? Filmed in 1933, when things couldn’t look any more depressed, the Busby Berkeley–choreographed classic Gold Diggers of 1933 became a box-office smash for its story of four aspiring actresses who get their big break after one of their boyfriends, also a struggling talent, magically comes up with the funds to back a huge musical production replete with dozens of scantily clad showgirls. We later learn that he’s not struggling at all, but is actually part of a wealthy family who know all the right people. Thankfully, the right people include other single rich men ready to get hitched. Now, they’re really in the money.
