The homos are feelin’ hot, hot, hot again, and they’re letting off steam at Dixon Place’s annual HOT! Festival, a month-long showcase of queer performances. Even DP’s new configuration (a 120-seat theater and a smaller lounge) isn’t enough to contain the heat—HOT! events are going on all over town, including a cabaret series at Joe’s Pub and the Highline Ballroom, plus partnerships with the Living Theatre, Bluestockings Bookstore, and CUNY. According to producer Earl Dax, “A more risk-averse person might have introduced new elements incrementally over time. My feeling has been: Let’s put it all out there.” This summer’s lineup includes some particularly hot stuff, like the fabulous Warhol-era party girl Penny Arcade in a new solo commission Old Queen (July 9–25); Big Art Group’s collaboration with Theo Kogan and Justin Bond on Cinema Fury: The Imitation (July 2); opera-thereminist Armen Ra and Bora Yoon (July 9); and a Monday-night salon series honoring the pre-Stonewall activist group the Mattachine Society.
